Purim Spiel
The OZ Players annual Purim Spiels tells the story of Megillat Esther in musical parodies of Broadway and Hollywood productions. Themes have ranged from "East Side Story" ("The most beautiful buy I'll ever make - m'tziyah, m'tziyah, m'tziyah, m'tziyah"), to "Star Schlep" ("Don't call for me Achashverosh") and "Esther Get Your Gun" ("I'm quick on the trigger, bag your shvester, bag your shvigger"). Written and directed by Congregants, the Spiel is a musical experience that bonds a cast and crew of over 40 adults and kids. And when, each year, the audience of hundreds of congregants and friends joins the cast in the OZ Players' concluding anthem "Or Zarua" (to the tune of "Oklahoma"), the magic of the moment culminates in thundering applause.
The 5764 Spiel was "The Chacham of O"Z", a brilliant takeoff on "The Wizard of Oz"; the 5765 production was entitled "My Fair Maidie: Extreme Makeover".
