Shabbat & Holidays

At Or Zarua, Shabbat is a celebration of our Judaism. It’s not just prayer.

Over the course of the year, we have Friday evening dinners, Shabbat afternoon speakers following kiddush, Minhah/Ma’ariv with learning and Havdalah events.

Please check our calendar for details on upcoming events.

Or Zarua members take an active role in creating a positive Holiday experiences. For Sukkot, we erect a rooftop Sukkah together which is open to members throughout the holiday. Be sure not to miss the catered dinner on the first night and Young Professionals can enjoy Sushi in the Sukkah on another night. Simhat Torah is caps off the fall holiday season with Hakafot in the Sanctuary. Passover is celebrated with a Congregational Seder on the second night led by our rabbi, Rabbi Bolton, with a special theme each year. Be sure to check the newsletter for the upcoming seder details. Learning is traditional on Erev Shavuot and Rabbi Bolton puts together a panel of members for a Tikkun Leil Shavuot to explore a different topic each year. In recent years, our teens have had their own Tikkun Leil Shavuot, too! Yizkor is recited during services during morning services on the 8th day of Sukkot and Passover and the 2nd day of Shavuot. All our welcome to remember their loved ones at these times of year.

Each year we come together to celebrate Hanukkah with a catered dinner and performance by Bir’nana.

Purim is a highlight of the Or Zarua holiday celebrations! We read all of Megillat Esther and celebrate as a community with music, food and a spiel. One of the most meaningful parts of our celebration is fulfilling the Mitzvah of Matanot L’Evyonim by collecting donations for those less fortunate. See pictures from Purim 2019 here!
