Hesed Committee

On December 14, 2014, USY members hosted a Hanukkah Hesed Program, offering a range of hands-on activities including sorting clothing and coats donated by OZ members, preparing 138 sandwiches, and creating holiday cards, all to help New Yorkers. Participating nonprofits include Urban Pathways, New York Cares and the Educational Alliance. The event included an educational session on tzedakah featuring Ilene Scholnick Ausubel from the Educational Alliance. Park East Kosher Butchers donated food for the sandwich preparation. Many thanks to all who helped!
In the spirit of gemilut hasadim, the Or Zarua Hesed Committee coordinates the congregation's efforts to help those within our local community who are in need.
Below is a list of some of the synagogue's recent Hesed activities. For more information, please contact the Or Zarua office by email at info@orzarua.org or by telephone at 212.452.2310, Ext. 10 unless alternative contact information is provided.

DOROT's Passover Package Delivery
Passover Hesed Opportunity with Dorot!
Sunday, April 10, 2016, at 10:15 am
Volunteers needed Sunday, April 10, for DOROT's Passover Package delivery. We will meet at 10:15 am at Park Avenue Synagogue, 50 East 87th St. (at Madison Avenue), to pick up a Passover package for a senior living on the East Side. Home visits last up to an hour. As one volunteer said, "We loved visiting our senior - she appreciated the opportunity to talk even more than the package." It's a perfect activity for the whole family with community service credit available.
Please contact Lesley Palmer with any questions or to register.
Help the Hungry & Support NY Common Pantry!
Or Zarua collects food year round for New York's hungry and your help is needed! A basket has been placed in the social hall for food donations of healthy (low-sodium, whole wheat, low-fat or nonfat), packaged grocery items, which will be distributed through the New York Common Pantry, the City's largest community-based food pantry.
Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the Common Pantry distributes grocery packages to thousands of families, and relies on volunteers to get the work done. Or Zarua sends a team of three to five volunteers the first Wednesday of every month to volunteer in the pantry's distribution center, located off Fifth Avenue at 8 East 109th Street. Volunteers are asked to work from 9 am to 12 noon in the pantry's distribution center. Volunteers take turns filling bags with items selected by the pantry's clients, and it's a great way to see firsthand how the organization works.
Please email Lesley Palmer for more information or to sign up for September 2, October 7, and November 4, 2015. Please join us!

Monday Night Pasta Servers Needed!
Or Zarua Congregants serve hot food and good cheer to men and women with a range of mental health and addiction issues at the Neighborhood Coalition Shelter’s East Residence at 211 East 81st Street from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. on the last two Mondays of each month. By spending one hour (6-7 p.m.) per month, you will experience personally rewarding interactions with the residents while performing your own special mitzvah! Email Richard Stadin with questions and to volunteer.
Annual Hanukkah Toy Drive
Or Zarua holds a toy drive every fall in anticipation of the festival of Hanukkah. New toys are donated to needy families through a nonprofit agency.
Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas Eve Food Deliveries
During certain holidays, Or Zarua volunteers pack up and deliver food donated by Eli's and the Vinegar Factory to the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter Residence, the Ronald McDonald House and other organizations serving people in need.
Contact Richard Stadin at 212.879.0448 or stadin1@aol.com

Ronald McDonald House
Children come from all over the world to undergo medical treatment at New York City hospitals. Many reside with their families at the Ronald McDonald House but often lack a local support system of friends or relatives. Or Zarua provides year round support to families who require kosher meals, synagogue services, and other assistance. Please email Richard Stadin for information.
Donate Surplus Clothing and Furniture
Donations of "pre-owned" adult and children's clothing, toys, dolls, games and other items are provided to Salvation Deliverance Church in the South Bronx for distribution to those in need in their community. Contact Richard Stadin, stadin1@aol.com or (212) 879-0448, to arrange drop-off or (in the case of significant donations) pick-up.
