On December 14, 2014, USY members hosted a Hanukkah Hesed Program, offering a range of hands-on activities including sorting clothing and coats donated by OZ members, preparing 138 sandwiches, and creating holiday cards, all to help New Yorkers. Participating nonprofits include Urban Pathways, New York Cares and the Educational Alliance. The event included an educational session on tzedakah featuring Ilene Scholnick Ausubel from the Educational Alliance. Park East Kosher Butchers donated food for the sandwich preparation. Many thanks to all who helped!
In the spirit of gemilut hasadim, the Or Zarua Hesed Committee coordinates the congregation's efforts to help those within our local community who are in need.
Below is a list of some of the synagogue's recent Hesed activities. For more information, please contact the Or Zarua office by email at email@example.com or by telephone at 212.452.2310, Ext. 10 unless alternative contact information is provided.
DOROT's Passover Package Delivery
Passover Hesed Opportunity with Dorot!
Sunday, April 10, 2016, at 10:15 am
Volunteers needed Sunday, April 10, for DOROT's Passover Package delivery. We will meet at 10:15 am at Park Avenue Synagogue, 50 East 87th St. (at Madison Avenue), to pick up a Passover package for a senior living on the East Side. Home visits last up to an hour. As one volunteer said, "We loved visiting our senior - she appreciated the opportunity to talk even more than the package." It's a perfect activity for the whole family with community service credit available.
Or Zarua collects food year round for New York's hungry and your help is needed! A basket has been placed in the social hall for food donations of healthy (low-sodium, whole wheat, low-fat or nonfat), packaged grocery items, which will be distributed through the New York Common Pantry, the City's largest community-based food pantry.
Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the Common Pantry distributes grocery packages to thousands of families, and relies on volunteers to get the work done. Or Zarua sends a team of three to five volunteers the first Wednesday of every month to volunteer in the pantry's distribution center, located off Fifth Avenue at 8 East 109th Street. Volunteers are asked to work from 9 am to 12 noon in the pantry's distribution center. Volunteers take turns filling bags with items selected by the pantry's clients, and it's a great way to see firsthand how the organization works.
Please email Lesley Palmer for more information or to sign up for September 2, October 7, and November 4, 2015. Please join us!
