OZ Perspectives: Masterworks of Modern Jewish Scholarship

November 5, 2019
6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Six-session course taught by Rabbi Joseph Schwartz
Tuesdays, 6:30-9:00 pm, Nov. 5 through Dec. 10
Since the middle of the last century, the field of academic Jewish scholarship has exploded with talent and new, often challenging ideas. Scholarship unsettled received views and verities, and was a ground of great political and theological ferment. Even more than the beit midrash, in the last century the academy has played an essential role in generating new ways of understanding the Jewish past and present – and pointing us toward a different Jewish future.
Please join Rabbi Joe Schwartz as we read and explore together some of the masterworks of Jewish scholarship composed over the past century. Readings will include selections by Gershom Scholem, Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi, Robert Alter, Jon Levenson, Judith Plaskow and Daniel Boyarin.
