Hevra Kadisha Program
Shiva and the Power of Community
Shiva is something we probably don’t think about very often, but almost certainly will experience in our life. And the thing about shiva is you should not do it alone. A key aspect of shiva is the minyan, which requires ten individuals over the age of Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
Let’s come together to have a bite to eat and hear from three members of the community: Phyllis Solomon, Rabbi Amy Bolton, and Ilona Charkow, talk about their experiences with shiva and what the community has meant to them. We’ll also have a short review from Rabbi Bolton about some of the shiva basics so that we all feel comfortable paying a shiva call. Since food is an integral part of shiva, we are going to be catering this talk from Eyal Shani’s new Kosher Miznon restaurant for an extra tasty treat. And since this is about shiva, no one will be turned away at the door, but if you know you plan on coming, please RSVP by emailing Deborah so that we can get an idea of how many people to expect and have enough food.
At the end of the program, we’ll be saying prayers for Israel which will provide an opportunity for anyone in mourning or observing a yahrzeit to say Kaddish.
