“Do We Need a King?” The biblical and talmudic sources for the Amazon Prime Series: House of David)
The Torah tells us, according to our tradition, that it is our choice as to whether to appoint a king or not. The Books of Samuel tell the tale of the Jewish People demanding a royal leader and the Prophet Samuel’s and God’s reaction. And now, Amazon Prime ran a new series called “House of David” to retell the tale. We will study the Jewish sources that the Amazon series used in filling the gaps in the biblical narrative. Talmudic and midrashic texts were blended with the biblical stories to create the show, in addition to being made fantasy-like by the creative powers that be.
