It is our story, that of America and that of the Jewish People.
Isaac takes up the challenge of his father and mother to continue the story of the Jewish People. He is known as the “father” who did not leave Israel.
Isaac’s taking responsibility for his People is symbolic of every next generation stepping up to the challenge. And how impressive have they been? All of the soldiers and reservists in the Israeli Defense Forces and the entire Israeli public have been our inspirations in the face of attacks by terrorists and antisemitic actors. They have helped each other survive and even thrive.
We, too, can be proud of continuing the story of the Jewish People in America. Our commitments to Jewish literacy and learning, authentic and participatory services, as well as a strong connection with our homeland make us stronger as both Jews and Americans. Over Thanksgiving, I felt much gratitude for the opportunities we have been granted in this nation where religious freedom and ethical idealism inspire a better future for all.
In America perhaps more than any other place on earth individualism has taken hold of the imagination. Life plans are often about fulfilling our own dreams, hopes and plans. As mindful Jewish souls, we are also connected to the visions and hopes of those who came before us. May we find the right balance between personal fulfillment and the aims of Am Yisrael, our People. And may we give great thanks to God for all that sustains us.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Bolton
