Join OZ Member Dr. Hal Gutstein to learn about the unique way Rembrandt depicted Biblical subjects by looking at how his art relates to Jewish scripture and interpretation as well as the broader Jewish community and customs in Amsterdam. Using Rembrandt as a starting point, we will look at the origin of the Amsterdam Jewish community, important contemporary figures and the Rembrandt’s ties to Amsterdam’s Jews, his understanding of Jewish sources, and his overall significance in art history and our religious tradition.
