Who was the prophet Elijah? Biblical stories portray him as a single-minded, religious zealot and miracle worker. How did he become the forerunner of the messiah? Why does he still play a major part at Passover, at the conclusion of Shabbat, and at circumcisions? We will examine Elijah’s career to gain a greater understanding of the variety of roles he continues to play in our own Jewish rituals and customs.
