Dr. Regina Stein, member of Congregation Or Zarua
We read the Book of Jonah on the afternoon of Yom Kippur because the Rabbis understood the city of Nineveh to be the paradigm of efficacious repentance. But Jonah was unhappy about this. By examining what Jonah says and does, we might gain a deeper understanding of his extreme displeasure and hopefully make our own experience of Yom Kippur richer and more meaningful.
