Marc addressed the development of Jewish tradition within a classical framework that claims to be fully comprehensive tracing back to the original revelation at Mount Sinai. The Torah explicitly prohibits additions or alterations to the original revelation: “You shall not add anything to what I command you or take anything away from it!” (Deut. 4:2). Indeed, the Talmudic rabbis generally considered the divine Torah to be perfect, all-encompassing and permanently valid. Even God could not amend the original revelation! So how has Judaism justified its own historical development in the face of those threshold limitations?
